Shirodhara
Ayurvedic oil therapy for nervous system restoration, deep rest, and mental calm
What is Shirodhara?
Shirodhara is one of Ayurveda’s most deeply calming and restorative treatments.
Designed to soothe the nervous system and quiet mental overactivity, this traditional therapy involves a continuous stream of warm herbal oil gently poured across the forehead and scalp in a rhythmic flow.
While simple in appearance, the effect can be profound.
Many people seek Shirodhara during periods of stress, burnout, poor sleep, anxiety, exhaustion, emotional overwhelm, or when they simply feel disconnected from themselves and unable to properly rest.
This is a treatment that invites the body and mind into stillness.
In Sanskrit:
Shiro means “head”
Dhara means “flow”
Warm herbal oil is slowly poured in a continuous stream over the forehead, specifically around the area traditionally associated with the third eye and nervous system regulation.
The rhythmic movement of the oil, combined with warmth and stillness, helps guide the body out of “fight or flight” and into a more restorative parasympathetic state.
From an Ayurvedic perspective, Shirodhara is particularly supportive for excess Vata dosha, often associated with anxiety, overwhelm, insomnia, nervous system depletion, racing thoughts, dryness, and burnout.
People often describe Shirodhara as unlike anything they’ve experienced before.
Benefits may include:
-
nervous system regulation
-
deeper sleep and improved sleep quality
-
reduced stress and mental fatigue
-
calming of anxious or racing thoughts
-

-
deep relaxation and restoration
Many clients notice a lingering sense of calm and steadiness in the days following treatment.

What are the benefits
of Shirodhara?
What should I expect during a session?
Your session will begin with a short consultation to understand your current state of health, stress levels, sleep patterns, and overall goals.
You will then lie comfortably on the treatment table while warm herbal oils are gently applied to the scalp and forehead using a traditional Shirodhara vessel.
The oil flows continuously in a rhythmic motion for a period of time designed to support deep relaxation and nervous system down-regulation. The treatment is quiet, warming, and intentionally slow. Some people drift into a dream-like state during treatment, while others simply experience a profound sense of stillness.
Following the session, you will be given time to rest and slowly reorient before leaving.
