Why Your Body Isn’t Working Against You (And What Ayurveda Understands That Modern Wellness Often Misses)

There was a time when I viewed every symptom as something to get rid of.

If I wasn’t sleeping well, I wanted to sleep better.

If I felt anxious, I wanted the anxiety to disappear.

If my digestion felt off, I searched for the one thing that would fix it.

Like many people, I spent years trying to silence my body instead of understanding it.

One of the biggest shifts Ayurveda gave me wasn’t a herb, a treatment, or even a particular way of eating.

It was a completely different relationship with my body.

Instead of asking, “How do I get rid of this?” I learnt to ask, “What is my body trying to tell me?” and that one question changed everything.

Your body is constantly communicating

One of the fundamental teachings of Ayurveda is that the body is always moving towards balance. It is intelligent and it is adaptive. It is constantly responding to the environment around you.

When you don’t sleep well after several late nights, that’s not your body failing you, when your digestion slows after weeks of eating on the run, that’s not your body being difficult and when your shoulders tighten during a stressful period at work, your body isn’t betraying you, it’s responding.

The body is continually adjusting to protect you, compensate for you, and communicate with you.

Your symptoms are often the language of that communication.

The problem is that many of us have become so disconnected from our own bodies that we’ve forgotten how to listen.

We live in a world that encourages us to override ourselves

We eat because the clock says it’s lunchtime, not because we’re hungry. We stay awake because there’s more work to do, even when our body is asking for rest.

We push through exhaustion because slowing down feels unproductive.

Over time, we become very good at ignoring subtle signals until eventually they aren’t so subtle anymore.

Often, the symptoms that bring people to my clinic; poor sleep, fatigue, digestive issues, anxiety, chronic tension, didn’t appear overnight.

They’ve been building quietly for months, sometimes years.

The body whispered first. And after being ignored it began to shout.

Awareness comes before change

One of the reasons I love Ayurveda is that it doesn’t begin with a list of rules. It begins with observations like: How do you feel after certain foods? What happens to your energy during the day? How do you sleep when you’re stressed? What season of life are you in? What happens to your body when the weather changes?

These questions might seem simple, but they’re incredibly powerful because once you begin paying attention, patterns emerge and once you can recognise the pattern, you can respond with intention rather than habit.

Like increases like. Opposites create balance.

This is one of the simplest principles in Ayurveda, yet one of the most practical.

Warmth balances cold.

Stillness balances excess movement.

Moisture balances dryness.

Rest balances depletion.

If you’ve ever noticed yourself craving soup on a cold winter evening, you’ve already experienced this principle.

Your body is seeking balance.

The challenge is that if we’re disconnected from what we’re actually experiencing, it’s difficult to know what balance looks like. If we don’t recognise that we’re depleted, we keep adding more stimulation, if we don’t notice that we’re running hot, we keep pushing harder, if we don’t recognise dryness in the body, we unknowingly choose more drying foods and habits.

Awareness has to come first.

Healing isn’t about becoming someone else

Sometimes people think Ayurveda is about changing everything overnight. But I believe Ayurveda is gentle medicine. It’s about becoming deeply familiar with yourself. Noticing what gives you energy and noticing what drains it. Learning your patterns and understanding your body’s language. From there, the choices become surprisingly clear. Not because someone else has told you what to do, but because you’ve developed the ability to respond to your own experience.

That, to me, is where real health begins.

The body is on your side

Perhaps the greatest lesson Ayurveda has taught me is this: Your body isn’t your enemy, it’s not broken. it’s not trying to make life difficult. It is actually doing its very best to adapt to the life you’re asking it to live.

When we stop fighting our symptoms and start becoming curious about them, something shifts. We move from control to relationship, frustration transforms to understanding. We move from constantly searching for the next solution to developing trust in the intelligence that’s already within us.

I believe that this is where healing really begins.
