What if you're not meant to have endless energy in winter?

Last year I did something I'd never done before.
Instead of taking time off over summer, I took the entire month of July off.
At first, it felt strange. We're so conditioned to keep going that slowing down can almost make us feel guilty. But as the weeks passed, I realised something.
Winter isn't asking us to keep up the same pace we've had all year.
It's inviting us to do something different.
One of the things I love most about Ayurveda is that it encourages us to pay attention to the rhythms of nature. When we do, we start to notice that nothing in the natural world is trying to bloom in the middle of winter. Trees conserve their energy. The earth rests. Seeds quietly prepare beneath the surface for what's to come.
Yet we often expect ourselves to keep operating as though it's the height of summer.
When we feel tired, we assume we're doing something wrong. We reach for another coffee, push a little harder or tell ourselves we'll rest later.
But what if your body isn't failing you?
What if it's simply responding to the season?
That doesn't mean we spend three months under a blanket (although some days that's certainly tempting). It means becoming a little more intentional about how we care for ourselves.
Maybe that looks like choosing a nourishing meal instead of another takeaway.
Going to bed half an hour earlier.
Saying no to something that doesn't need to happen.
Rolling out your yoga mat for twenty quiet minutes instead of an intense workout.
Taking a walk in the winter sunshine.
Or simply giving yourself permission to do a little less.
I've noticed over the years that some of my clearest ideas don't arrive when I'm rushing from one thing to the next. They come when there's space. When life gets a little quieter. When I stop trying to force everything.
Ayurveda teaches that health isn't just about what we eat. It's about how we live. The pace we keep. The way we sleep. The quality of our relationships. Our routines. The changing seasons.
Everything has an influence.
Winter reminds us that rest isn't something we earn once everything is finished. It's part of the cycle that allows us to grow.
So if you've been feeling slower lately, perhaps the answer isn't to fight it.
Perhaps it's to listen.
Your body might just be asking for exactly what this season was designed to offer.
